First edition. A novel by a Baptist minister and supporter of W.E.B. Du Bois, printed by his own publishing company. It was written in response to the racist novels of Thomas Dixon and Thomas Nelson page, and touches upon passing, emigration to Liberia, and lynching. Illustrations are by the Black artist Robert E. Bell of Topeka, Kansas. The book is discussed and extracted in Rice, "Witnessing Lynching: American Writers Respond," pages 105-110.

This copy is inscribed by Griggs to a white Presbyterian minister, Hughes Oliphant Gibbons of Philadelphia.
